Ensembles Policies

Founded in 1984, ATMTC Student Ensembles are intensive performance and training groups for motivated and talented musical theater students. Members of the program train in basic musical theater techniques and learn, perfect, and perform song and dance numbers from the musical theater, pop, holiday, and patriotic repertoire. The Student Ensembles bring their talent to VIP Events, in venues throughout the DC Area, the United States, and abroad, and perform in Spotlight, a fully produced annual musical revue.

ATMTC Student Ensembles curriculum incorporates the National & State Fine Arts Standards of Learning, providing a challenging outlet for students to develop the skills necessary to be successful performers, including self-discipline, teamwork, problem solving, and self-confidence.

Casting in Professional Productions

Class Policies

-

  • All ATMTC Class Policies apply to participation in an ATMTC Student Ensembles, except where otherwise noted.

Casting

-

-

-

-

-

  • Each student must audition.  (See Juries for reacceptance into the program.)

  • Acceptance is at the sole discretion of the ATMTC Staff.

  • Students with exceptional talents, but lacking in certain skills may be accepted on an "Improvement Plan”. (See below.)

  • All casting decisions are final and non-negotiable.

  • Casting of each individual number is at the sole discretion of ATMTC Staff. ATMTC tries to give each student a chance to be featured. However, every student is at a different stage of training, development and ability. As professional theater practitioners and educators, we place great importance on our philosophies, the quality of our programming, and our abilities to assess a student’s capabilities. ATMTC wants each student to be shown at their best.

Juries

-

-

-

-

-

-

  • Juries are paneled performance evaluations. As an intensive program, we expect students to work hard to continue growing and perfecting their craft and performance abilities.

  • Ensemble members will be juried two (2) times a year, in January and June.

  • Juries are a chance for ATMTC Staff to assess  a student’s progress, commitment and technique.

  • Students who do not pass the mid-year jury may be put on an Improvement Plan and will be required to address certain issues in order to continue in the program.

  • Students who are already on the Improvement Plan at the time of the jury, who do not pass, may be dismissed from the program, without refund.

  • Students who are on an Improvement Plan and who do not pass their end-of-year jury will have to re-audition, in order to return to the program.

  • Students who pass the end-of- year jury, will be accepted into the program the following year, without need for audition.

Evaluations

-

  • Parents and students are required to attend an evaluation, after mid-year juries. In certain cases, evaluations may be held after end-of-year juries.

Volunteering

-

-

-

  • Parents may have opportunities to get involved and volunteer with Student Ensembles projects.   Opportunities include helping with sewing and maintaining costumes, backstage and technical assistance, ushering, ticket sales, concessions and more.

  • Please be aware that volunteering opportunities are only presented for positions that must be filled in order to provide the best performance experience for our students. We ask that interested volunteers review both the job description and necessary time commitment before applying for the position. Volunteers should only commit if they are able to responsibly fulfill all the needs of the position, unless otherwise arranged with the coordinating staff.
It is important to note that volunteering does not entitle parents to interfere with the decisions, policies, or creative decisions set forth by the ATMTC Staff.

Student Service Learning Hours

-

-

  • Ensemble members may earn Student Service Learning Hours for Road Show performances.

  • Forms must be printed and filled out by parents before they are presented to the Assistant Production Manager to sign.

Absenteeism

-

  • Student Ensembles members are allotted five (5) absences (excused and/or unexcused) during the entirety of the annual program. Two (2) late arrivals or early departures are considered one (1) absence. Additional absences may result in dismissal from the program without refund.

-

  • High School Senior Student Ensembles members who are auditioning for higher learning institutions are encouraged to reserve these five absences for this purpose. It is the student’s responsibility to cross reference their audition dates with the Student Ensembles calendar.

-

  • Should a Student Ensembles member be cast in a professional production, students must notify ATMTC staff and may submit a Request for Additional Absences form for approval. Approval for additional absences is at the sole discretion of ATMTC staff and will be considered for professional productions only. (See Absenteeism and Probation dismissal.)

-

  • Student Ensembles members must make every effort to attend and perform at all road show appearances; however conflicts in attending road show appearances will not count against your allotted absences.

-

Absences during Spotlight Tech Week are not permitted. Any absences during this week may preclude you from participating in Spotlight.

-

Casting of each individual number is at the sole discretion of ATMTC Staff. If a student is absent when a number is staged, they may be excluded from that number.

-

Members who must miss rehearsals are expected to rehearse on their own time and be prepared with music and choreography for the next rehearsal.

Conflicts

-

  • A schedule of all known rehearsal conflicts must be provided to your stage manager prior to the start of rehearsals.  Please see the Student Ensembles calendar.

-

Additional conflicts that arise must be made known to your stage manager as soon as possible.  (See attendance policy.)

Federal Holiday Closings

-

  • ATMTC observes Federal holiday closings.  Rehearsals may be held on religious holidays that are NOT Federal holidays.  Absenteeism at rehearsals that are scheduled on religious holidays that are NOT Federal holidays is at the discretion of each family and will NOT count against the five (5) allotted rehearsals.

Casting in Professional Productions

-

Due to our relationship with most DC regional theatres, Casting Directors may work around your ATMTC Student Ensemble commitments. When auditioning for professional productions, all members should list “ATMTC Student Ensembles” rehearsal and mandatory performances (i.e. Spotlight) as a potential conflict.

-

Should a Student Ensembles member be cast in a professional production, students must notify ATMTC staff and may submit a Request for Additional Absences form for approval. Approval for additional absences is at the sole discretion of ATMTC staff and will be considered for professional productions only. (See Absenteeism and Probation dismissal.)

-

Student Ensembles members missing rehearsals may be excluded from material covered in those rehearsals. (See Absenteeism.)

Road Show Appearances

-

  • Ensembles bring their enthusiasm and talent to community centers, senior facilities, holiday programs, street fairs, parades, and venues throughout the DC region, nationally and internationally.

-

  • Additional performances and appearances are called Road Show Appearances and may occur throughout the season.  Significant notice will be given to participating students.

-

Student Ensemble members must attend the designated Road Show rehearsal in order to perform in that specific Road Show.

-

  • Student Ensemble members must make every effort to attend and perform at all road show appearances; however conflicts in attending road show appearances will not count against your allotted absences.

Rehearsal/Performance Preparation

-

  • Each member, with his/her parent(s), is expected to read, to respond to, and will be accountable for the contents of each e-mail from their stage manager .

-

  • Student Ensemble members must come to rehearsals in the proper designated attire.  Each member will be required to purchase basic performance necessities (shoes, tights, etc.).  A list is provided in your Welcome Packet.

Costumes

-

-

-

-

  • Road Show costumes will be available for yearly rental from ATMTC. Additional personal clothing items (i.e. shoes, tights, etc) must be provided by each student. For further information on Road Show costume pieces and rental fees, please refer to the Required Materials & Attire list in your Welcome Packet.

  • Spotlight costume pieces will be provided, however, students may have to provide basics and some personal articles of clothing (i.e. shoes, tights, jeans, etc).

  • Student Ensembles members that destroy costumes because of their own negligence may be charged for any damages or loss.

  • Failure to wear the appropriate costume to a performance may prevent a member from participating in a particular number or the entire show.

Probation / Dismissal / Improvement Plan

-

-

-

  • Students with exceptional talents, but lacking in certain skills may be accepted into the program with an Improvement Plan. Students accepted with an Improvement Plan will be required to take ATMTC Academy technique classes to address skill deficiencies.

  • Students on the Improvement Plan will be monitored and evaluated throughout their participation in Student Ensembles. Students whose skills do not show improvement, may be dismissed from Student Ensembles or excluded from participation in certain numbers.

  • At any time, should ATMTC Staff have misgivings about a Student Ensemble member’s performance level, technique, attitude, attendance, commitment or parental conduct, he/she may be put on probation with notice. Failure to meet outlined polices and standards may result in dismissal from participation without refund.

  • See Juries for additional information.

Parents must respect the decisions of ATMTC Staff.

-

Parents are not permitted to be in the rehearsal studios unless given explicit permission by ATMTC Staff.

-

Parents are not allowed to take pictures of performances unless given explicit permission by ATMTC Staff.

Questions/Concerns

-

  • If an Ensemble member or parent has a question or concern regarding your student, their progress, or with any questions or concerns related to Ensembles, he/she should e-mail the stage manager. If a response is required from someone other than the stage manager, please rest assured the email will be forwarded on to the appropriate ATMTC staff member for a response or to schedule an evaluation meeting.
