Adventure Theatre, in partnership with the Jazz Academy of Music will present a 45 minute staged reading of BUD, NOT BUDDY at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, with live music performed by students from the Jazz Academy of Music, along with minimal sets and costumes will be performed by Washington DC Area professional actors in a reading, followed by a 10 minute interactive workshop with the audience members.
Set in Michigan during the 1930s, Bud, Not Buddy tells the story of 10-year-old Bud Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes, and his quest to find his father. Bud's journey sets him on the trail of a jazz band known as Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. A flier for one of Calloway's shows leads Bud to Grand Rapids and Calloway, the man he believes is his father. Bud gets into all sorts of trouble along the way in this story, filled with uncanny wisdom, which offers a set of hilarious "Rules and Things" designed to help our resilient young hero navigate a world of confusing expectations. Rich with adventure and humor, Bud, Not Buddy is a coming-of-age tale for young and old alike. The novel also won the Coretta Scott King Award. Flexible stage for multiple settings. Approximate running time: 45 minutes.

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BADY DAY

Based on the book by Judith Viorst
Book and Lyrics by Judith Viorst
Music by Shelly Markham
Directed by Gail Humphries Mardirosian
Featuring Sandy Bainum
Ages 4 and up |
Alexander is having a bad day. A terrible day. A horrible day. To be quite honest, it's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes. Not only does Alexander wake up with gum in his hair, but his mother forgets to pack him dessert, and his best friend decides he's not his best friend anymore. And if that's not bad enough, Alexander's brothers don't have any cavities but—he does. And just when it can't get any worse, there are lima beans for supper and —yuck!—kissing on TV. It is enough to make anyone want to go to Australia. Uuuugggghhh.
